Our Response to the COVID-19

All in-person gatherings are currently suspended.

We are committed to monitor and communicate with you as best we can. You can check back here or on CCB for ongoing updates. With this, please be sure that your contact information is up to date on CCB. If you do not have a CCB account, please consider setting one up

We will continue to utilize the technology available to us to continue our life together as the Church. We are currently working as a staff to create different touch points throughout the week so that we can remain connected and available to our church family.

Our Most Recent Update

As government directives and restrictions are changing we are asking a lot of questions of how we might begin to gather in-person again for worship services and other ministries of the church. The information and requirements we are learning about remain fluid, however, we believe there is still research and preparation to be done prior to our gathering in person together.

As of today, Tuesday May 12th, 2020, we have decided to stay the course with our LiveStream (porticolive.org) only worship services through at least the end of May. This will allow us time to plan, prepare and learn best-practices as we open our facilities back up. While we don’t have an official open date for our facilities today, we will continue to keep you up to date on our progress.

Worship Online

How Can We Help?

On Sundays, worship gatherings will take place online through porticolive.org at both 9 am and 11 am.  These services will, as usual, include music for worship, sermon, and announcements. We are grateful to God for the technology that will allow us to continue to gather together for worship as we are scattered throughout the Charlottesville area and beyond.

We are commited to providing ongoing care in any way we are able. If you, or if someone you know is in need of help whether it is a pastoral or practical need - please let us know by clicking the link below and filling out the short form. These forms are only seen by members of our Pastoral Team.

We are paying close attention to the recommendations from the CDC, State Officials, and Local Officials. If you have questions, needs  or are looking for clarification, you are also welcome to email Pastor Bliss at [email protected] or any of our Pastoral Staff.

Giving  & Serving

Finally, though we are not gathering physically, it is important that we continue to give faithfully of our time, talent, and treasure. If you were scheduled to volunteer on one of the upcoming Sundays, consider taking time to pray for our church, our leaders, and our community on Sunday morning before we worship together.

We also would ask that you continue to give faithfully to the work God is doing in and through Portico Church which will not stop. There are three ways to give at Portico with the current changes in place:

  1. Give Online: https://porticocville.ccbchurch.com/goto/giving
  2. Give Via Text: Text an amount to 434.406.4920.
  3. While the first two options are preferred, you can also mail a check or set your financial institution's bill-pay to our mailing address:
Portico Church
P.O. Box 5365
Charlottesville, VA 22905

If you know that the current situation will have an impact on you being able to meet your giving commitment, please let Portico’s Finance Manager, Janet Lohr know by emailing her at [email protected].

Prayer

For many of you, this current moment is understandably unsettling. The question we are each asking is, "who is in charge here?" That is the question we ask when we are afraid, and in many ways is the question we ask when we are cynical though maybe in a different tone. We know that the Christian faith has declared over and over again that it is God who is control. God's authority and care are at the heart of the Psalmist's honest prayer in Psalm 121 and the Apostle Paul's encouragement to the Church in Rome in Romans 8:35–39.

And while we may know the answer, one of the most common practices in our faith to get that truth into our bones is the practice of prayer. During this unprecedented season, we are renewing our call to our church family to be a praying church.

Consider joining Pastor Bliss for morning prayer on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays via ZOOM  Meetings.

CONNECTING AS A CHURCH

Even though we are suspending in-person gatherings, we will continue to utilize the technology available to us to continue our life together as the Church and to remain connected and available to our church family.

Community Groups are being encouraged to change the way they gather, utilizing things like Facetime, Google Hangout, Zoom, etc.

GIVING

Finally, though we are not gathering physically, it is important that we continue to give faithfully of our time, talent, and treasure. ENCOURAGEMENT

As a leadership team, we are trying to live this out and provide pastoral shepherding out of prudence, not panic. And yet, we honestly believe that dramatic short term efforts are required to exhibit wisdom and love our neighbor. This is why we’re moving all of our ministries online for the foreseeable future.

Please see and read the article by Justin Taylor from the Gospel Coalition. It helps summarize our leadership’s thinking on how to love our church and community during this challenge. Although it’s tempting to give it a cursory glance, we strongly recommend you to follow the links in the article so that you can educate yourself more fully.

We are paying close attention to the recommendations from the CDC, State Officials, and Local Officials. If you have questions or are looking for clarification, please feel free to email Pastor Bliss at [email protected] or any of our Pastoral Staff.

Any decision for future or ongoing suspension will be made week by week and communicated via our website (porticocville.org/coronavirus) and by email via CCB.

Community Groups will meet at the discretion of the Community Group Leaders but with a strong recommendation to suspend gatherings this week. Any decision for future or ongoing suspension will be made week by week and communicated to CG Leaders by Pastor Desmond.
