Welcome from Courtney!

Dear Portico Families,

Hello!  I wanted to take a moment to write and let you know how excited I am to be on-board as Director of Portico Kids!  While you may already know my back story, I’ll repeat it here, just in case.

I am a native Charlottesvillian and attended Albemarle County Public Schools.  I received a BA in history from JMU and a Masters degree in Elementary Education from UVA.  For the past 28 years, I have been teaching at Murray Elementary School in Ivy.  Most of that time was in fifth grade teaching English and Virginia Studies, but I did a four-year stint in fourth grade and five years in first grade, just to change things up.  I also was the summer school administrator for the Western Feeder pattern a few summers.

My 22-year-old son, William Marshall, works and lives in the Charlottesville area, and my shih-poo, Huckleberry, and I live in Crozet surrounded by my extended family.

Holly Good, Cameron Koon, and Ruth Yoder have done such a great job of steering the PK ship this past year.  I whole-heartedly thank them along with all our wonderful Volunteers for their presence, persistence, and perseverance during these transitional times.

Keeping our kids safe, forming loving, healthy relationships, and guiding our kids to become disciples of Jesus needs to always be first and foremost in our hearts and minds, therefore, my immediate goal is to adopt Pastor Jason’s charge to be “Brilliant in the Basics.”  I’m looking at our current practices and structures and getting a general lay-of-the-land.  However, getting to know each of you and all the children of Portico is also one of my most pressing priorities!  Please feel free to come up and introduce yourself on Sunday mornings or schedule a time to come in and chat.  My email address is:  [email protected].

I want to close by asking each of you to pray.  Pray for our kids.  Pray for our families.  Pray for our church, and please pray for me.  I will undoubtedly make mistakes, make changes that may or may not please you, and will certainly hit some snags, but know that I will be prayerful, will seek input from my team, and will try to always do what is best for our children. I’m so excited to see what the Lord will do as we work together to give every child an accurate picture of God and build the children up as disciples of Jesus.

In Christ alone,
Courtney
